What We Look For
We start with basic confirmation that a provider is real, operating, and genuinely offers pet cremation services. That means we check:
- An active business address and verifiable phone number
- A website, Google Business listing, or both
- Evidence of pet cremation as a primary or clearly offered service, not a side note buried in a vet clinic service list
We exclude businesses that only offer human cremation, pet cemeteries that do burial but not cremation, shelters, groomers, and any listing where pet cremation is ambiguous or unconfirmed.
Our Verification Steps
Step 1: Data sourcing. We compile providers from Google Maps, trade association directories (including IAOPCC and PLPA), and periodic manual research. This gives us a starting list.
Step 2: Initial review. Each listing is reviewed against our inclusion criteria. We remove obvious non-matches with high confidence and flag borderline cases for closer review.
Step 3: Cross-referencing. During our initial directory build, we cross-referenced providers against IAOPCC (International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories) and PLPA (Pet Loss Professionals Alliance) member rolls. This helped us confirm legitimacy and flag providers with formal trade affiliations.
Step 4: Spot checks. We conduct web-based spot checks on a rolling basis, reviewing provider websites and Google Business listings, with priority given to providers that receive traffic or inquiries through the directory.
What We Don’t Claim
We are not a licensing authority. We don’t inspect facilities or certify that any provider meets a particular standard of care. What we can tell you is whether a business exists, operates as described, and offers the service you’re looking for.
We also don’t fabricate reviews. Any ratings displayed on provider listings come from third-party sources (such as Google) and are labeled as such.
How we collect pricing data
PetCremation.org collects pricing through two methods, which are labeled separately throughout the site:
Observed provider data
Prices labeled as observed provider data are drawn from direct sources: provider websites, published rate sheets, email responses, or phone calls to active providers. We record service type, species or weight brackets when available, pickup fee inclusion, return-container inclusion, and quoted or published base prices. The number of provider records contributing to each chart or range, the states covered, and the date last verified are noted on each page where this data appears. We use the middle 80 percent of quotes for any given service tier and region to reduce the effect of outliers.
Modeled estimates
Prices labeled as modeled estimates use regional cost-of-living indexes and published industry ranges to project typical pricing for areas where direct provider quotes are limited. These figures are clearly identified as estimates on any page where they appear and are not substitutes for quotes from individual providers. The Pet Cremation Cost by State page uses modeled estimates and says so in the page header and in the table description.
Update schedule
Provider listings are reviewed on a rolling basis and updated when we identify a change in business status, address, or contact information. Pricing data for our flagship cost guides is refreshed twice yearly, typically in May and November. Each page carries a “Content last verified” or “Updated” date so you can assess the recency of the information.
Provider count methodology
Our directory currently lists more than 2,200 providers associated with pet aftercare services across all 50 states. This count includes dedicated pet crematories, veterinary practices that offer cremation services, and pet cemeteries that include cremation. Some state-level summary pages show a filtered count of providers whose primary listed service is cremation. Those filtered counts will be lower than the total directory count for that state and are noted as such on the relevant pages.
Featured placements and affiliate relationships
Some directory listings are paid featured placements. Featured status affects on-page placement order; it does not influence our editorial reporting about service types, pricing patterns, or provider-selection guidance, and featured providers are not included or excluded from pricing data based on their featured status.
Some links on this site to national partners may generate a commission if you contact or purchase through them. That financial relationship does not change our editorial recommendations. Commissionable links are labeled where they appear.
Editorial guides, cost data, and provider recommendations on PetCremation.org are written independently of any paid featured listing or commissionable partner relationship.
What we do not do
We do not accept payment to include or exclude a provider from editorial counts. We do not accept payment to change a provider’s editorial rating or recommendation. We do not mix featured placement revenue with the data collection process used to calculate price ranges. We do not guarantee the accuracy of individual provider pricing. Prices change, and we always recommend contacting providers directly for current quotes before making any decision.
